TOP 10 LIFE LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM TOY STORY

Let’s face it, movies are great! We love to watch them, and our kids, with their unadulterated and wild imaginations, love them more. When we can screen a film for them that is educational as well as fun, then you’ve just hit the proverbial home run, granting yourself some free time to do the things you need to whilst the kids enjoy a film and learn a thing or two in the process.

With the announcement of a new Toy Story film in the works, we thought we’d take a look back at the Top Ten Life Lessons our kids (and us adults too) can learn from the masterpieces that are Toy Story.

1. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

As taught by Buzz Lightyear. Believe in yourself, and don’t listen to the naysayers.

“When Buzz first arrived in Andy’s room in the first Toy Story installment, he truly believed that he was sent on a mission to save the planet. Those little red lights were lasers. That jet pack with wings meant that he could fly. Because Buzz believed in himself, he ended up proving everyone wrong and flying in the end!” // babble.com

2. WE ALL HAVE A HISTORY (AND BAGGAGE)

When we found out Jessie’s past, everything changed. She had been keeping her guard up around Woody and the gang for a reason, and a reason we can all relate to. Friends will sooner or later let us down and hurt us, and it is just a part of life.

3. GET YOURSELF THE BEST OF FRIENDS

When all hell is breaking loose in life, and times are tough, always have a friend to lean on. Woody, Buzz and the gang stuck together through thick and thin, supporting each other not only in the good times, but when they were in mortal danger.

4. BE THERE FOR YOUR FRIENDS

A great lesson, one that is really prevalent in today’s day and age. You don’t leave a friend behind when they need you.

“There were many times throughout the Toy Story series when it would have been easier for the gang to leave a toy or two behind. From their run-ins with Sid to their adventures at the airport, the toys stuck together and made sure that no toy was left behind.”

5. BAD KARMA IS REAL

When Sid finally got his comeuppance, bad karma has served it’s course, and what goes around, came around. One of the most enjoyable moments of the Toy Story series was seeing the villain get what’s coming to him from the gang. This is a great lesson for kids, as is the next one…

6. SO IS GOOD KARMA

“The love of the Mr. and Mrs. ‘Tater being repaid by the alien trio is what saved the entire crew in their most harrowing moment. It’s important to take time to do good things for others! That good will come back to you.”

7. DON’T BE AFRAID TO REINVENT YOURSELF

Dream big and don’t lead a boring life. A little spice will go a long way, and so don’t be afraid to try new things and push your self professed limitations. Buzz embraced his change to Spanish settings, for example, and just went with it!

8. MAKE A PLAN, THEN EXECUTE

This is actually one of my favourites, as a firm believer that in order to achieve anything worthwhile, you need to set a goal, plan and then execute. Having a plan can get you through the tough times, knowing your outcome well enough to keep pushing forward. In Toy Story, we see the team come together and with the aid of Etch A Sketch and Speak and Spell, they map out what they need to do to save the day.

9. DON’T BE SCARED TO SHOW HOW YOU FEEL

“If you love someone, let them know. Heck, write your name on their boot and tell the whole world.”

This is one of the greatest lessons to come from Toy Story. The power of the relationship between a boy and his toys. He loved them dearly and appreciated all the joy they brought into his life.
